Your Guide to Eyelash Extensions

I have started the best bad habit of them all – eyelash extensions! I am 100% in love with my lashes from Smudge Chicago and I have compiled a guide to helping you get your own eyelash extensions.

Step 1: Do your research.

Your eyes are such a vital part of your everyday life that you need to do the proper background research before getting extensions. If you’re in Chicago, I did it for you – just go to Smudge Chicago 😉 Make sure that the glue used is safe and that application appointments range between 1-2 hours. Anything less and you are not using a professional.

Step 2: Figure out what look you’re going for.

I wanted a natural look but clearly wanted a noticeable difference! Some other girls I know work in TV so they needed a more full lash that is more similar to dramatic falsies – that isn’t how I want to look when I roll into the gym, so Marguerite suggested we go with a lighter set. I am pretty happy with my decision.

Step 3: Eyelash extension appointment.

My appointment could not have gone better. Marguerite was so helpful in answering any and all questions I had on the application process, materials involved, etc. What happens is that your technician will apply a fake eyelash on top of your real eyelash, one lash at a time. This is definitely a long process, but you want your technician to do a great job, so it’s necessary. Marguerite’s set up is so comfy that I fell asleep not once but TWICE, which if you know me, you know that’s a big deal since I cannot nap. It took around two hours to complete. If anything during the application hurts, something is wrong. If I was able to sleep, you know it’s painless!

Here is my before / after:

Step 4: Maintenance.

Now that you have these pretty things on your eyes, you have to keep them looking great! There are a few rules Marguerite gave me to extend the life of my lashes. First, do NOT get the lashes wet for 12-24 hours after application (Marguerite says the longer, the better) so that the glue can dry properly. Try not to sleep on your side or crumple up the lashes when sleeping – I sleep on my side, and I’ve found placing a pillow under my chin resolves this issue! Also, DO NOT (I cannot stress this enough) use makeup remover wipes on your eyes! Learn from my mistake – it ripped out so many lash extensions by accident. Use oil free makeup remover on a q tip to remove eye makeup, the wipes are good for the rest of your face. Only use oil free mascara and products on your lower lashes and eye area to not affect the bonding of the glue to your natural lashes.

Step 5: Look fabulous, cause now you truly do wake up like this.

I am sooooo happy with my lashes and I know I will be doing this routinely from now on. I never have to wear makeup and it’s a wonderful gift. Check out Marguerite and Smudge Chicago if you’re in the area – I know you’ll be as happy as I am!

  5. Your lashes look beautiful. I’ve always wanted to try out lash extensions but felt it would be a waste on me as I must wear my glasses daily and contacts are not an option – I’m too blind. Maybe I will attempt and see if just having fuller would help, even behind my specs. Thank you for the inspiration.
