Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

I was first introduced to Vital Proteins and their collagen peptides purely by proximity, when I walked by their HQ in Chicago on the way to an event.

“I love their collagen stuff. I use it every morning,” my friend remarked as we passed by the windows with said product proudly displayed on a banner.

When I got home that evening, I Googled to find out exactly the “collagen stuff” was, and why it was plastered all over the Vital Proteins office.

Vital Proteins is a Chicago-based wellness company popularized by their collagen peptides, a product backed by the likes of Jennifer Aniston – and, of course, me with my gold star 🙂

What are collagen peptides?

Collagen is a protein that helps structure our skin, nails, hair, bones and connective tissues. You’ll often see many skincare products with “collagen” in the name, as it’s a major part of keeping our skin elastic, youthful and hydrated. As important as collagen is to our skin, it’s also a major player in joint health.

As we age, our bodies’ production of collagen slows, with a major decline at around age 25-30. Collagen peptides are a supplement designed to help our bodies “regenerate what’s been lost or broken down” through the collagen production process.

What are the benefits of taking Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides?

I credit my morning collagen with the strength and length of my natural nails. They used to be brittle and break very easily. I’m pretty rough on my nails and unintentionally slam them into surfaces quite frequently. Now, when I notice a crack or break, it’s far smaller and usually I can get away with filing it down instead of losing the entire nail! I also can tell a difference in my hair grow out, and for lack of a better term, general “shine.” I feel good about taking a proactive stance on my bone health, as I know it’s something that is very important for women.

I am 26 and my collagen production is probably just slowing down, so I do not have many wrinkles yet or feel other aspects of the aging process that many say collagen fights. However, I do have my mom trying it, and I’ll be sure to update with her thoughts after a month of usage.

How is it consumed?

I typically put a scoop or two in my morning coffee! I find that they dissolve best into warm liquids, and I don’t taste them at all. Some friends put their scoops into smoothies or water, but I feel like you can sometimes taste the grit and texture of them that way.

I have been using Vital Proteins collagen peptides for years now, and I love the product. I know a lot of people use the product to age gracefully, which I think everyone, myself included, would like, but I also really am happy with what I already see in my hair and nails. I feel good about doing something for my joint health, as arthritis is common in my family, and for trying to protect my bone density.

Obviously, one product is not a magical “fix all”, and a lot more goes into being a healthy person. Taking collagen peptides combined with eating healthy and working out makes me feel like I am being on the offensive when it comes to my overall health, not just waiting for problems associated with aging to develop and then being on the defensive then!
