Cancun Travel Diary

I am back in cold Chicago after a fantastic family vacay to Mexico in my Cancun Travel Diary!

We left on the 29 from St. Louis and arrived around lunch time in Cancun. Once we got to our resort, Ocean Coral & Turquesa, we changed and went to the beach! I’ll admit I was a bit concerned that I had to have my camera and laptop down at the beach with us while we waited for our rooms to be ready, but thank goodness no sand got into anything.

I was really impressed with the beach set up at the resort – our entire family was able to snag some umbrellas and chairs together and quickly made that our base camp. The resort itself was stunningly colorful, draped against the sea and all the palm trees. I shared a room with my sister, and I was happy to find that it was large enough for the two of us with ample closet space. Score!

This swimsuit top is from Victoria’s Secret which no longer does swimwear (epic fail) but I found a similar top and exact bottom.

That night, I wore this comfy romper from MOD to dinner! I loved how airy and lightweight it was, especially because it was super humid out.

We had our first taste of the resort’s entertainment that evening, with a dancing show, but since we had all woken up super early for our 5 AM flight, we went to bed pretty early.

The next morning, we woke up and quickly ate before boarding a ferry to Isla Mujeres. My friend Tori had introduced me to the island last time I was in Cancun and I fell in love! It’s a tiny island that’s almost a trip back in time… there are barely any cars on the island, and you travel everywhere on golf carts. We rented a large golf cart to fit our entire family and off we went to explore!

My Isla outfit consisted of a crochet bikini top / crop top and embroidered denim shorts over bikini bottoms in case we wanted to hop in the water.

We visited the Turtle Farm, where sea turtles are nursed back to health and released back into the wild, little shops, and a Mayan temple ruin while circling the island. We went to lunch at a beachside bar where there was ample wifi and stronger drinks than at the resort.

We returned back to the resort and got cleaned up for dinner at another one of the restaurants available, followed by performances of Grease by the hotel entertainment staff. Nick really got into that! HA

This Lilly Pulitzer dress is out of stock, but I found similar ones here and here. I wore my Jack Rogers practically the entire trip!

New Year’s Eve was a fantastic day from start to finish! I woke up early and was able to get lots of sun time reading on the beach before the rest of the kids even got up, which I loved. The food at every meal was amazing and I ate my weight in platanos fritos that breakfast!

I got so many messages about this MOD one piece I wore! It was so comfy and sucked me in at all the right places 😉 I included a pic of the back so you can see how it fits (Ignore my burnt butt) BUT it has adjustable straps which are oh so important to all my bigger chested ladies.

We all got ready for New Year’s Dinner, which was Phantom of the Opera themed, and took family photos before our reservation. I’ve never seen more seafood than what we were served for that meal! Grilled lobster tails, crab legs, shrimp, salmon, YUM.

After dinner, the hotel staff performed the Phantom of the Opera (abridged) and it was interesting… BUT it was followed by an epic dance party. We participated in the 12 grape tradition, where you eat 12 grapes right before midnight to bring good luck in the new year. They don’t tell you how fast it goes – I barely made it in time!! Zack dropped his last grape, so stay tuned to see if his December turns out poorly as a result, haha!

New Year’s Day was pretty chill, especially because we were a little more tired than normal 😉 I got loads of questions about this ASOS swim suit! The bottoms are high waisted but there are also cheeky low riders in the set, as well as a proper triangle top. Both fit extremely true to size and were so comfy. I am a gingham lover so this was a swimsuit made in heaven.

We didn’t really do much other than lay out and find a monkey that the hotel workers had trained to climb on you. I was excited until they told me I had to pay for photos… and then the monkey peed on another girl. No thanks.

My sister wanted us to go to the Hibachi restaurant at the resort, so we obliged. It was odd eating Japanese stir fry in Mexico, since my goal for the trip was to eat nothing but queso and tacos, but it ended up being entertaining.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was waking up to see the sunrise on the beach the last full day. It was idyllic and out of a movie!

Yall loved this MOD one piece. Perfect for you and the girls, and oh so retro with the cut!

Our last day was also very chill and relaxing, not doing much besides sunbathing and reading, and of course, drinking.

This outfit made me feel like putting Despacito on repeat. The shirt is flowy and so is the skirt (similar)! I paired it with my trusty Jack Rogers.

This was a great trip with our family to escape the cold and enjoy the legal drinking age in Mexico. Remember, you can get 20% off your first MOD purchase with code Cait20!!
