Gigi Hadid x Maybelline

Supermodel Gigi Hadid can now add a beauty line to her long list of accomplishments, thanks to an exclusive collaboration with Ulta and Maybelline. Her collection is split into East Coast and West Coast products, with the idea that you get two looks with the two different product sets. Let’s dive into the Gigi x Maybelline collab!

Jetsetter Palette

Gigi frequently hops on planes to “jetset” across the world, and she says that was her inspiration for this palette. It’s a one stop shop for a quick makeup refresh. The Ulta website says it contains 2 concealers, 2 lip balms, 4 eyeshadows, 1 blush, 1 matte bronzer, 1 highlighter, 1 mini Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara and a mirror.

For under $30, this seems like a good buy for someone who frequently travels and doesn’t want to be fussing with finding things in a makeup bag. However, there have been some concerns with the coloring of the blush and concealer, with some customers saying it has more orange undertones than they would have liked, so be mindful of this! I do think it’s hard to put together an “all in one” palette where EVERYONE likes EVERYTHING, so the split reviews make sense. If you try it and love the eyeshadow, someone else will try the same eyeshadow and hate it, but love the highlighter, and so on. I would like to see this “all in one” thing again, though, preferably with a higher end line – hint hint MAC / Tarte / Urban Decay / Too Faced!!!

East Coast

The “East Coast” collection is more neutral and work-friendly, playing into the “New York is work and LA is fun” stereotype a tad. It’s made up of a tinted moisturizer, a liquid highlighter, two eye contour palettes, a mascara, a contour brush for eyeshadow, both liquid and pencil eyeliner, three lipsticks and three lip liners. The colors are more muted and more similar to what I choose to wear on a day to day basis. I am a big fan of the nude Gigi picked for the East Coast, called Taura.

Beauty vloggers have praised the lipsticks, but there have been complaints about the size of the eyeshadow pans. The eye contour palettes do appear to be a little smaller than I’m used to, but it’s also way cheaper than Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes like I normally use. You get what you pay for! I think this would be good for travel – it’s small enough to throw in a bag and leave lots of room for other beauty products.

West Coast

The “West Coast” collection is a lot more flashy, with brighter colors, metallics, and bold lips. It likewise has a tinted moisturizer, a liquid highlighter, two eyeshadow palettes, a mascara, an eyeshadow brush, a nude eyeliner, a black eyeliner, three lipsticks and three lip liners. Again, I really like the lipstick colors Gigi picked, especially Austyn, the red she chose.

This mascara is apparently superior to that of the East Coast collection, but everything else seems to fair similarly. There are similar complaints about pan sizes in the eyeshadow palettes, but the lipsticks get high marks.

My Picks

Overall, I think both collections are on the same playing field. It ultimately comes down to which collection better fits you and your lifestyle. The East Coast collection is more of what I wear daily, but the West Coast reminds me of what makeup I would wear on a night out. My personal favorites are the lipsticks, and I love that Gigi lets you purchase the lipsticks and lip liner bundled! I am a big fan of tinted moisturizers, and I am eager to try it out for myself when my shade is restocked.

The complete selection can be found exclusively at Ulta.com and hits Ulta stores on Monday, November 5.
