Tools of the Blogging Trade

Happy Monday! A lot of you have been asking me what equipment and tricks I have for blogging – whether it’s editing Instagram posts or photography basics. Here are all my tools of the trade to hopefully help you up your game!

Cameras

Depending on what you will be doing in terms of content, you very well may need multiple cameras. Most people are split 50/50 between the Nikon and Canon camps, but there are some Sony loyals. I am a Canon girl myself. I have two cameras that serve two very different purposes. I have a Canon T7i with multiple lenses (see below) for the bread and butter of my blog photography, and I have a Canon Mark II for videos and more “on the go” casual shots.

Lenses

Your DSLR camera will likely need different lenses depending on your content needs. For example, you won’t shoot portrait fashion shots with the same lens you would shoot food or recipes with because of the different f stops! I have a few lenses for different needs, and I definitely think getting multiple is worth it.

Laptop

You will need a computer, most likely a laptop, to be able to bring with you everywhere. From writing posts to editing photos, this laptop will be essential to your blog. You can get away with a relatively cheap one or you can invest in a laptop you will have for years and years that will likely be quicker and easier to use.

Editing software

Editing is a crucial part of your brand. Your photos need to be edited consistently and the easiest way I have found to do this is to invest in an editing software like Adobe Lightroom. Some people use Illustrator and Photoshop, but I think Lightroom by itself is cheaper and just fine!

Apps

Editing photos for Instagram can be taken one step forward through editing apps. My favorites are VSCO, A Color Story, and Snapseed.

Tripod

There may be times where you cannot find someone to take your photo – this is when you need a tripod! You can likely control the camera on a tripod through a remote or even your phone, depending on what camera you choose. I know most of the Canon cameras are able to be controlled through a phone app, which makes it so easy!

Duffel bag

If you are a fashion or lifestyle blogger, you will need to invest in a good duffel bag for shoots. When you have your hair and makeup done, you need to take advantage of it and shoot as many outfits as possible! A good duffel has zippers for things like hair accessories and jewelry, has enough room for shoes and clothes, and is durable.

SD card reader for cell phone

One of the easiest ways to get nice professional photos on the go is to buy an SD card reader for your phone. This allows you to edit it quickly on your phone without having to go on your laptop. It’s a game changer!

Ring light

The lighting is not always perfect for a photo, especially when you’re inside. That’s where ring lights come in. They produce the perfect lighting with a cool white hue, not the yellow gross hue of florescent indoor lighting. It makes all the difference!
