How to Get Rid of a Hangover

Happy New Year! If you’re like me, you prooooobably went a little too hard last night and are now nursing a hangover. I consulted my RN mom and RD bestie, then consolidated the info and turned their science talk into normal English to help get all of us over this hangover ASAP!

Advice from a Nurse and a Dietician

  • There really is no quick fix, you have to wait it out
  • Eat breakfast and fuel up
  • Get hydrated
    • “A hot water and lemon does the trick for me and also soothes my sore throat!”
  • Regain electrolytes by drinking Gatorade or Pedialyte
  • Take a nap
  • Have another drink
    • “This only prolongs the hangover, but if you’re looking for a quick fix, it does work.”
  • Exercise!
    • “This may seem like the last thing you want to do, but the endorphins from a low-intensity workout like yoga, or even just stretching, can help.”
  • Treat the specific symptoms
    • Headache = ibuprofen (NOT acetaminophen)
    • Lack of alertness = caffeine
    • Upset stomach = TUMS or other medication
